Roorkee canal tragedy: Roorkee, Uttarakhand – In a distressing incident, a 17-year-old individual, who was under the custody of the Uttar Pradesh Police for the suspected killing of his elder brother, made a fateful leap into Gang Canal in Uttarakhand’s Roorkee. Authorities had taken the teenager to the location after he disclosed that he had disposed of his brother’s body there, but the situation quickly escalated into a tragedy.
While the police assert that the teenager attempted to flee their custody by jumping into the canal, the family members have come forward with a grave allegation. They claim that the young boy’s demise was a direct consequence of mistreatment during his interrogation. In a display of their anguish and demand for justice, the family members and residents of the minor’s village surrounded the local police station, urging the authorities to hold accountable the responsible police officials for murder.
To address the situation swiftly, Saharanpur Senior Superintendent of Police, Vipin Tada, has initiated a comprehensive search operation with the assistance of four teams. Collaborating with the Uttarakhand Police, the joint efforts aim to locate the bodies of the two brothers. Shedding light on the incident, SSP Tada revealed that the 17-year-old had confessed to the killing of his elder sibling. However, upon reaching the crime scene in Roorkee, he managed to free himself from custody and plunged into the canal.
The series of events began when a 45-year-old man lodged a missing person report concerning his eldest son on Sunday. Initial investigations pointed towards the younger brother as a potential suspect. Subsequently, during the interrogation, the younger sibling allegedly confessed to the murder and disclosed that he had disposed of the body in the Roorkee canal.
Speaking to The Indian Express over the phone, a senior police officer explained, “We dispatched a team of officers along with the family members to the crime scene with the intention of locating the victim’s remains. However, upon reaching the canal, the teenager unexpectedly managed to break free and jumped into the water. While our search operation is ongoing, we have yet to find any trace of the two brothers.”
The officer also reassured that the family’s allegations would be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate action would be taken if any police misconduct were discovered.
In a show of solidarity and support, prominent political figures such as Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) former legislator Imran Masood and former minister of the Samajwadi Party, Sarfaraz Khan, met with the grieving family. They have demanded an extensive investigation to uncover the truth behind the incident. Haji Fazlur Rehman, the Member of Parliament from Saharanpur representing BSP, also reached out to SSP Tada to discuss the matter.
As authorities continue their search efforts, this tragic incident has left the community shocked and demanding answers. The unfolding investigation aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s leap into the canal and provide closure to the grieving family.
